Sound Post for Independent Films: PT1

Over the next few weeks, we'll be posting blogs giving an insight to sound post production on the latest independent feature film by Agent Pictures, 'ELIMINATE: Archie Cookson'

An offbeat espionage thriller which follows the life of MI6 spy Archie Cookson (played by Paul Rhys of BBC Three’s Being Human, Robert Altman’s film ‘Vincent and Theo’ and Attenborough’s ‘Chaplin’). Sidelined in his job and ignored by his estranged wife (Claire Skinner, of the popular BBC TV comedy Outnumbered, Tim Burton’s ‘Sleepy Hollow and ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’) and eccentric, precocious offspring, things take a turn for the worse when he stumbles upon classified tapes that no one was meant to hear.

From the outset, we worked closely with Rob Holder (director/writer) and Ioanna Karavela (producer), to create a sound post schedule that was flexible, allowing Agent Pictures to continue with the picture post work-flow (Edit/Grade/VFX) concurrently, all working towards the films deadline. We applied our extensive experience to create an engaging soundtrack, whilst dealing with the day-to-day challenges that go with independent feature film post production.

After a few meetings with the production team, we planned the sound post using our in-house system. The film was shot in Bristol and this vibrant city was our first port of call in order to record atmos sound pick-ups for the films main scenes. We chose locations that would most closely replicate the films intended feel and in some instances, we visited the exact locations to gather the appropriate sound in surround format. Back at the studio, this sound was layered with our extensive library and wild-tracks provided by location sound recordist, Daniel 'chu' Owen. Each room and location in the film has it's own sound signature, which also changes depending on the mood of the scene.

"We're keen to create unique sound beds for every film that are realistic, have depth, and maximise the dynamics from scene to scene. The background sounds really matter in a film: it's all about the details"

ADR Session for Pleasure Droid 3000

Last weekend saw Dreambase Studios recording an ADR session for new high-profile short film, 'Pleasure Droid 3000'. The film is produced and directed by Oliver Purches and was written by Stephen Scott-Hayward. Set in the near future this sci-fi comedy is about a guy who takes his robot girlfriend back to the shop were he bought her, complaining that he bought the 'pleasure model', but his robot is acting like a real woman! The film is cast with James Harrison, Richard Cambridge, and Jessica-Jane Clements, star of BBC series 'The Real Hustle'. Pictured from L-R are: James Harrison, Jessica-Jane Clements, Stephen Scott-Hayward, Kate Timmons and Oliver Purches.

For those not familiar with the term, ADR stands for Automatic Dialogue Replacment or Additional Dialogue Recording, and happens when production dialogue recorded when the cameras were rolling is unsuitable for the final version of the film, perhaps because there was too much background interference for instance.

Experience Dolby Mobile surround sound

We were recently commissioned by global entertainment technology company Dolby Laboratories to provide concept and sound design for a series of 5.1 soundbites to help promote the new Dolby Mobile microsite. The microsite also features several soundtrack examples from well known films plus a specially made video by UK beatbox champion Beardyman!

So grab your headphones and click to the Dolby Mobile microsite to see what it's all about. You can also download the soundbites to your computer or mobile phone.

A Day in the Life

We were commissioned to produce a short promotional film, highlighting a typical day at Red Oaks Primary School. The shoot was completed in a day, the music was recorded in the morning during an African choir performance by the students for their African guests and the whole film lasts only two and a half minutes, a real whirlwind of a film. A fabulous school and a real pleasure to be involved in such a project. The film was shot using the EX1 in 1080p with stunning results. Click here to see the film.

"Working with Dreambase Studios was an absolute pleasure; nothing was too much trouble and our vision for the film has more than been fulfilled." [Terri Menham, Head Teacher, Red Oaks Primary School.]

"The School day film is STUNNING, utterly brilliant!! LOVE IT!!" [Jack Smellie, Relaxed Web Design.]

Foley Stage

Welcome to our new Foley stage. Designed and constructed in-house for the UK Film Council short film 'Frequency' (Gurchan Singh - writer/director. Hank Starrs - producer) which is scheduled to premiere at the Encounters International Film Festival in November this year. The Foley stage will allow us to create and record 'every day' sounds that are required as part of the sound post production process. This, coupled with our sound effect libraries and experience within the film industry, will add depth and enhance the film soundtrack. Our stage is very practical and efficient currently incorporating six neatly designed trays that allow us to expand surfaces as and when required. We have a selection of microphones and our isolated room facilitates accurate recording of sounds with an incredibly low noise floor. Coupled with fantastic visibility and talk-back communication, a great Foley performance is only a step away!

Mark says, "Using the Foley stage on our latest short made a real difference in the mix. The Foley recordings, combined with well selected room tones, atmospheres and sound libraries gave us complete control, providing all the necessary elements for great sound design and a dynamic mix. We have achieved a fantastic soundtrack which we are very proud of and the clients are extremely happy with."

S.E.N. Community Art Documentary

Dreambase Studios were commissioned to film the project over the 2 weeks, producing a 30 minute documentary which is to be used as part of the S.E.N. Uplands school's prospectus. The film was premiered at the school during a recent parents evening where everyone was able to admire the artwork in situ, then watch the film to find out how it was all created and put together.

The project was funded by the National Lottery and was organised and run by Purton-based artists Antoinette Robinson and Gordon Dickinson from No Added Sugar. The artwork around the entrance to the school comprises brightly painted circular panels depicting scenes created by those taking part, with the schools’ motto, ‘a vibrant and caring community where learning for life is fun’, as its theme. Inside the foyer of the school a series of square designs create a bright and lively display against the white walls.

‘It has been such a great success, the art work is unbelievable and has made the entrance to our school very welcoming and vibrant’. 'Dreambase Studios displayed an empathy and understanding for our young people straightaway and understood what it was we wanted to capture and portray in the filming of our Community Arts Project. They have captured our arts project in an unobtrusive way that didn’t impact on the project, but actually enhanced it. The film will help our organisation moving forward'. [Jackie Smith, Head Teacher, Uplands School]

Inhouse Research and Training Materials

We provided video and voiceover facilities to In-house Research and Training this week for use within their renowned training courses for house sales and construction staff. Their new house demonstration and handover training courses take place across the country and are much respected within the construction industry.

The work involved providing our EX1 camera and three-way Dedolight kit to film a training video. Post production on the film included audio editing, sound design and video conform. We also recorded voiceovers from a script prepared by In-house which were then edited into individual .WAV files to enable them to be played at the appropriate points from within a PowerPoint presentation.

Labour Candidate Campaign Film

We were approached by the Labour Party in Swindon to film the North Swindon candidate, Victor Agarwal's campaign. They wanted a professional film with high production values on a tight budget. The film was shot using the Sony EX1 HD camera in 1280 x 720 /25p with boom mic and the 3-way Dedolight Kit with softbox & grid. We managed to turn this around very quickly as time was paramount. We provided the editor with well logged clips, alternative takes and transcoded options for optimum flexibility in the edit as well as offering advice on the technical aspects of the film, including delivery formats.

"This is an awesome result, all I can say is wow! The way the posters have been arranged also have surpassed my expectations, and give it a lot of impact with the lighting." [Ramon Lawson, Producer / Editor]

Wootton Bassett Young Chamber

We spent an enjoyable afternoon with the Wootton Bassett School Young Chamber recently discussing how we and the other companies present can offer our help and expert specialist knowledge to pupils at the school. The Young Chamber is an initiative to give students the opportunity to gain confidence and skills to become an effective leader. It also enables them to work alongside business people to develop successful projects and also to develop partnerships with other young people across the UK. As part of their experience the Young Chamber is expected to organize several projects throughout the year such as Christmas markets, 'Dragons Den', company visits and business workshops, amongst others. As a company we will act as an occasional sounding board for the local students as and when they need our help and advice and we hope some exciting projects will come out of the initiative.

Wootton Bassett Repatriation Documentary

We were asked to provide camera and filming services for a Liverpool based film maker, who is developing a documentary about the Wootton Bassett Repatriations. Using a two-camera shoot we obtained footage from the event and conducted interviews with members of the public, many of whom attend the repatriation services on a regular basis. The idea behind the film is to show what it's like to really be there - something that's not often portrayed on the news reports.

The event was extremely moving at times (even though it had been attended before by us) and getting the balance of obtaining film footage and paying the utmost respect to the five repatriated soldiers and their families was a very difficult challenge.

BVE: The Production Show

Our first year attending the Broadcast Video Expo, Earls Court and what an event. Coupled with the new sister event, the production show kept us busy all day giving us free access to leading companies and experts providing the latest production technology, lighting, training, equipment hire, post production and studios for the content creation industries of Film and TV.

The buzz words of the show included DSLR, RED, MicroBudget and of course 3D. We kicked off with the seminar "Production on a Budget" followed shortly after by a fantastic insight to "Financing & Budget Models for Films" by Christine Hartland (Producer of David Holroyd's wmd nominated Best Debut UK Feature at the East End Film Festival 2009.) with the following links being suggested by Christine as essential for any filmmaker:

www.fundyourfilm.info
www.powertothepixel.com
www.scottkirsner.com
www.peterbroderick.com
www.filmpop.tv.

We talked with the guys from Glidecam, VFX Bluescreen Solutions, various lighting companies and some of the 3D technologies for broadcast. Our afternoon was very informative indeed with Jonathan Harrison's "Lighting on the Run" seminar sponsored by Arri. Within 60 minutes, Jonathan demonstrated the art of lighting and there was no doubt, this is the key if you want to stand out from the crowd. Our final seminar of the day was a panel discussion with industry experts on the "Future of Digital Video". In summary, video is playing a huge part in the shake up of content creation for all mediums. The future incorporates many new platforms and is gravitating towards industries such as mobile, gaming and the internet with social networking sites being key in advertising and marketing content. Our last call (but by no means least) was at the Vision Research stand and we were blown away by their Phantom 65 camera. With the capability to record at 34,188fps (ok, this was at a very low resolution) the camera is capable of shooting 320fps at full HD 1920 x 1080. Watching their showreel was absolutely stunning and we're now looking for an excuse to hire one!

In these rapidly changing times, we feel that we are perfectly situated to offer services, facilities and knowledge to create great quality content, understanding and respecting traditional methods of content creation using an engineering approach to innovate new efficient ways to create this content on a budget.

We would love to hear from anyone with a creative project at any stage of the production and feel we could offer our facilities, knowledge, feedback, ideas, contacts or simply, advice. Please email info@dreambasestudios.com, visit our website for more details or follow us on twitter / Facebook for the latest news.

RED ONE Workflow

Lighting cameraman David Read provides a comprehensive Red Camera package plus the services of a talented and experienced cinematographer with over twenty years in the business.

“The idea behind the RED camera system is simple. Design and build a high performance digital cine camera with the quality of 35mm film and convenience of pure digital. RED delivers unmatched image quality with no recording system limitations.” - taken from www.red.com

David visited our studios for the day to test the RED ONE workflow with Final Cut Pro 7 in our HD edit suite. After setting up a few shots, making full use of David's knowledge and lighting, we then ingested the footage via firewire 800 using the RED drive RAID and FCS 3 Installer that Provides native REDCODE media (R3D) support for Final Cut Pro and Color. Includes: RED QuickTime Codec (v3.8.0), Log and Transfer (v20.0.0), REDCODE plugin for Color (v2.9), and Final Cut Studio RED workflow whitepaper. Note: Supports RED ONE cameras up through Build 20.

The results were stunning, working in ProRes 4:4:4:4 was not an issue for FCP7, we could easily edit multiple HD streams using our G|RAID's and had no issues streaming HD direct from our RAID5 server to HD Plasma for client screenings. The 2k stills were im
pressive and the detail when grading in colour and zoom in motion was impressive to say the least.

A Young Film Student With Ideas

Alex Neville approached our studios for a weeks work experience in post production. He's in his second year of studying BA(Hons) Digital Film Production at the University of Gloucestershire and has worked on around 10 short student films over the last few years. His most recent documentaries are: "King Cone" and "Laundrette" which were well received.

We have many innovative project ideas and decided that we would complete one of our projects within the week Alex was at the studios (as well as completing the wiring of the ADR/foley booth.) Shooting all the scenes with the EX1, we completed a rough edit and bounced a ProRes version across the network to the 5.1 audio suite where Alex really got stuck into the sound design, recording ADR/Foley and mix. After colour correcting, he rendered out the short film which was demonstrated to a local special needs school and received some fantastic feedback.

"I just wanted to thank you again for having me down last week. On reflection I think I learned a lot and had a great time in the process. I will defiantly keep in touch and I would love to come and visit again in the future." [Alex Neville - Student, Digital Film Production, Gloucester University]

"Mark and his team came in at very short notice, quickly grasped our concept and worked at breakneck speed to produce a short promotional film. We instantly felt we were in safe hands with people who were happy to work with our ideas and blend with their own creative thoughts and experience to get the finished product.
